Australia, Aug 2009:
I've always wanted to go to Australia, and when I heard Jeff would be heading there for work I
knew that I had to visit. I actually bought my tickets before he did. Jeff's fiancee also came
to visit so the three of us explored the Sydney, Canberra, and Cairns areas. They went on later
to see Uluru and back to Sydney after I went back to Hawaii.

My timing was actually perfect: I finished my writing and editting my thesis, and submitted it to my
committee (4 weeks before my defense!) the day before I hopped on the plane to Oz. I got back to
Hawaii with two weeks to make my talk, pack, and prepare.

The view of Sydney from the plane, coming in for a landing.

The iconic Sydney Opera House (we saw Aida here a few days later!)

A pretty flower, name unknown.

A photo of me in front of the Opera House, from the Sydney Harbor Bridge

The Three Sisters, in the Blue Mountains outside Sydney

A shot from Jenolan Caves, an awesome area a few hours outside Sydney

We were told these are the oldest known caves in the world.

Frogmouth! Such a cool bird. When it opens its mouth, its like a muppet talking...

Yup, I got to hold a koala. It's OK, you can be jealous. (Me with Jeff and Sarah).

...and pet a kangaroo.

Barron Gorge, in Kuranda outside Cairns

Not a gum tree, but a kookaburra none the less.

Cool blue-stick bug.
